Julia has a broad civil litigation practice with a focus on public law and appeals. They have acted for and advised public bodies, private individuals, Indigenous nations, and companies on a variety of complex and novel matters.

Julia’s experience includes:

·       Municipal law, including challenges to municipal by-laws and administrative decisions;

·       Freedom of expression matters, including the application of anti-SLAPP laws;

·       Section 35(1) rights and title claims by Indigenous groups, with particular regard to the role of Indigenous legal orders;

·       Regulatory advice and representation, including on professional governance matters;

·       Human rights and tenancy matters;

·       Class actions that involve constitutional claims; and

·       Interventions for public interest groups.

Julia joined Arvay Finlay after working at a large national firm and a litigation boutique, both specializing in appeals and complex litigation, and clerking for Chief Justice Bauman at the B.C. Court of Appeal.

Julia has appeared before all levels of court in British Columbia and at the Supreme Court of Canada. They have a particular interest in work involving access to housing and the right to shelter, as exemplified in cases such as Bamberger v. Vancouver (Board of Parks and Recreation), 2022 BCSC 49, Vandenberg v. Vancouver (City) Fire and Rescue Services, 2023 BCSC 2104, British Columbia v. Friends of Beacon Hill Park, 2023 BCCA 83, McNeil v. Elizabeth Fry Society of Greater Vancouver, 2023 BCCA 231, and Lady Minto Hospital Foundation v. Salt Spring and Southern Gulf Islands Community Services Society, 2023 BCSC 1067.
